Solar power replaces electricity

Before ”jumping” into your solar system project to replace your mains electricity supply, the most important point to remember is that solar power is not boundless.

You are limited to the amount of power that you have stored in your batteries, whereas the limitations on power supplied by the main grid can be seen as virtually endless.

However there are definite benefits to supplying your own power needs, and contributing positively towards the alleviation of global warming and towards a greener environment

When you consider using solar power as a replacement for mains electrical supply, it is important to know the differences and capabilities of solar power systems compared to mains or grid-fed electricity.

The following appliances are not suitable for use with solar power:

Appliance/ load Best Solution
Electric Geyser Solar geyser, with gas or wood as back up
Electric stove/oven Gas or wood stove/ microwave oven
Air conditioner Ceiling fans or evapourative air conditions
Room heaters
Gas heaters, wood fire place and electric blankets
Electric kettle Kettle on stove/ jug in microwave

Most other household electrical items can be run from your solar power system, but we must look at the energy efficiency or each appliance.

For example:
  • Fridges and freezers have energy star ratings
  • Washing machines – top loaders are easier to use with cold water wash cycles
  • Microwaves have their power ratings clearly indicated
  • CFL – compact fluorescent lighting should replace all incandescent globes
  • LED – replacement globes are becoming more accessible and are extremely energy efficient

If you have the opportunity to influence the design of your home beforehand, then you can make the best decisions with regards to the overall energy efficiency of your home, from things like a good north facing roof area for your solar panels to efficient insulation in your walls and ceiling for cooler summer and warmer winters.

The more electricity that you use in your home, the more it will add to your initial investment cost of your solar system in order to meet your overall power need.

To design your solar system, you will need to calculate your total average daily power requirement.

If you go to the solar calculator, you can calculate your daily power requirement.

Once you have done this, you are ready to contact us and we will be able to advise you and assist you with the complete solar powered system
