Not monitoring your Solar Panel system installation is like driving a vehicle without meters on the dashboard. Imagine you have a vehicle which does not display the status of the Fuel /speed of vehicle RPM? I bet you cannot imagine that?  That would be same to not have some sort of Visual display of what is the status & performance of your Solar system would be

Solar Monitor Display Information

Generally a very comprehensive solar Monitor system is very expensive and can hardly be justified on the cost of a small solar system. As a result, solar Monitor systems often get left behind. On Bigger systems the % cost of a solar Monitor system becomes more reasonable.

Many systems small and Large come with some form of LCD display of at least part of the components. Ie a display on the MPPT solar regulator could indicate the charging current and the power harvesting of the day.  Power Inverters are usually on fitted with LED display which on display the minimum power Inverter status.

Solar Deep Cycle  Batteries do not come with any fuel status indicators as a standard.

Grid Tie inverters usually come with a small LCD display which also display the bear essential information

Different suppliers and product lines do offer various forms of Display or method of presenting the system status,


BMV700 Battery Monitor in line with a Solar Deep Cycle battery

Solar Deep Cycle Batteries are your energy storage Tank – Your Fuel tank, it is there for the most important item to have knowledge off.  A normal LED battery status display is on no way an accurate representation of your battery status.  To accurately monitor your battery status is a technological advanced process and even the most modern battery monitoring systems has a level of error. Over the lifetime of the battery the characteristics of the battery change, due to age. Further to this a solar Deep Cycle battery characteristics also vary with temperature.

 The Victron  BMV 600 & 700 series deep cycle battery monitor units measure current which goes in and out of the battery, It adapts partially to the battery age and status and also offer battery temperature accuracy compensation. Further it offers an Voltage free relay output which can be programmed for various battery status related functions. The Unit is fitted with a small LCD display, which by means of a scroll menu display all the information. The unit can be linked to victron website via the GSM Global remote or the GX Color Monitor unit

The Victron Global remote can be connected to the Victron Inverter range as well as the BMV700 Battery Monitor. This information can be linked to a website which monitor and record data in real time. This allows you to monitor your systems performance over days. The GSM remote also offer facility to reprogram power inverter systems remotely

The Color GX Monitor

The GX Monitor can link up with all the systems within a Solar Power system of which the other critical components are also Victron. It connects as follows

The unit further records and store data up to 60 Days long and transfer information as local display or transfer same to the Victron Website. The unit offer various display screens  for local viewing

The picture shows the various connections to the GX color monitor , which has input allowance for the Inverters, Solar regulators, battery monitor  and allow internet connection either via WIFI or Lan connection

This is a typical compact information display at any moment reflecting the status of power to or from the Grid, Power output from the inverter to the AC load, the Battery status, power drawn or supplied to the battery at the moment and also energy harvested from the Sun

Information above is another screen option for a 3 Phase system, in which power of each phase is presented as well as the PV and solar battery status

Victron Website information Display

The information presented on the Victron website is very informative can be viewed at  link the view Demo to enjoy. With the courtesy of Victron Energy, I will explain some of the valuable information which can be monitored below.  Please do note that all the information is not always available on all the systems, as it really depends on what products you do have, how they are configured and set up.

As a general rule we try to monitor all our clients systems, with the facility of remote programmability I can reconfigure systems remotely in order to optimize performance or to reprogram battery protection levels.  The remote reprogramming facility is however also limited.

This graph is a short synopsis of the current status  of which power is generated from the Solar  panel and what power is either drawn or delivered to the grid

Figure 9 a Short summary of the Total yield, battery status and Temperature

This graph also present a real time information of the total accumulated power generated by the PV system, current battery status , Consuption and the temperature in the area

This Graph is a recording of the output power of the inverter. This is very important information as it allows the designer to adapt setting, also possibly reconfigure the system or advice client to increase the system size

This SOC (State of Charge ) of the battery  indicates also the usage of the battery, note the lowest level is at 60%, a level which you preferably do not want to go lower than. This system is set to cycle around 60%

This graph, is a recording of the battery SAC, over time, we can go back 2 months and view the total cycle of the battery over a period. This is very important information. SOC is calculated by adding and subtracting in real time all the Current (A) which goes in and out of the battery at any time and make a calculated conclusion on the value of same

A recording of the physical variation is Battery voltage in current. The SOC graph does not display the real time dynamics, this graph give us that information. The Orange is the current; one can clearly see the voltage variations due to current peaks drawn from the battery. Designers can now view the graph and on these performances can decide if the voltage drop is acceptable, should batteries be increased…This is a good representation of the clients use and information in order to adapt the system to the performance required.

This real time recording of the warning and alarms  (Note the orange dots) , when it is an alarm it will be RED, in this case it is a orange WARNING alarm, warning us that the system is close to going into overload. We note various different kind of alarm can be set, Power, Battery Voltage and temperature

This more a “nice to have” graph, which tells us, what percentage of the harvested energy were directly used and what percentage went in battery charging

A real time recording of the Solar Yield, this graph would usually be directly representative of the CLOUD movements in the area as well, we can also see if the system get fully charged and not using the harvested power- or if we are losing energy

The VEBUS status is the status of the inverter recorded over time, here we can see, when the inverter were in Inverter mode, when it simply transfer power or when is actually charge the batteries as well as the mode of charge, Battery and Inverter overload  status is also displayed

The last graph of discussion is the state of the MPPT solar regulator; we can herewith also note the battery state and the state of the system. Note in the Night it is off, we start to get power transfer around 7AM. Around 10AM we reach an Absorption phase
